Artificial intelligence and machine learning are currently being deployed to make our lives easier. An example of that is the Google Maps and Apple Maps we use on our smartphones. Location navigation was once almost impossible to execute, but today, AI has made it possible to not only search for a location, but it also gives us traffic recommendations based on the historical data! We all use Google Maps, either while driving to navigate through unknown routes or to find a specific location, which has been made possible through machine learning.
The same thing can be said about voice assistants like Siri, Google Assistant, and Cortana. They use artificial intelligence to listen to our voice commands and understand what we need from them. This has made smartphones more intuitive, and we no longer have to physically search for anything on our devices.
Today, smartphones pack AI cameras to enhance the photography experience of the users. This can be highlighted by the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones offered by Google. While other phones pack multiple cameras, Google offers just one 12.2MP rear camera but uses AI to provide the best images possible.
For instance, the Bokeh mode in Pixel phones is powered by software algorithms, which, upon recognizing your face, decide the depth effects, and what should remain in focus. Known as DeepLab-v3+, which is a semantic image segmentation model, Google’s Pixel smartphones offer a depth of field effects without using a secondary lens.
Now, other smartphone brands like OPPO, Xiaomi, and Vivo are using artificial intelligence to provide the depth of field effects using just one selfie camera. Some of the best mobile phones under 20,000 INR such as Realme 7 Pro, OPPO F17, and Redmi 9 Prime pack AI cameras, which let users capture stunning images. Even upcoming smartphones such as Realme X7 Pro are expected to come with AI modes.
Processors Using Artificial Intelligence
Last but not least, even smartphone processors are now being powered by artificial intelligence. For instance, Huawei’s Kirin 970 SoC, along with Apple’s A-series Bionic chips now contains dedicated chips to seamlessly handle AI computations locally. This enables smartphones to easily distinguish between different animals by taking a photo or increase the phone’s security and battery life, among other things.
